    From Ambition to Reality: Building the Global Hydrogen Supply Chain​

    Toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, hydrogen is expected to play a pivotal role in decarbonizing the power, industrial, and transportation sectors. This session will examine the conditions needed to advance international hydrogen supply chains from the planning stage to commercial deployment, focusing on demand creation by companies in importing countries and collaboration across industry. It will also explore the development of standards, certification systems, and safety frameworks for international hydrogen trade, as well as financing and risk-sharing mechanisms to support the early-stage market. The discussion aims to provide practical insights into how international hydrogen supply chains can be successfully realized.

    Developing Regional Demand: Hydrogen Hubs in Practice​

    For the large-scale deployment of hydrogen, it is essential not only to develop infrastructure for production, transportation, storage, and supply, but also to establish mechanisms that aggregate demand at the regional level and encourage continued use. In this context, the “Japan‘ｓ Hydrogen Artery Initiative” is currently being advanced as a coordinated public-private effort. This session will discuss hydrogen hubs as integrated development models that bring together local governments, energy providers, industry associations, academia, and other stakeholders to advance demand creation and supply-chain development simultaneously. Drawing on lessons from early projects, participants will examine how anchor demand can be cultivated, how deployment can expand across regional markets, and what policy and commercial conditions are necessary to move from demonstration to full-scale commercialization.

    Shipping and Industry​

    Ammonia is an energy carrier that can contribute to decarbonization in power generation, maritime transport, and industrial sectors. At the same time, a number of challenges remain to be addressed before commercialization can be achieved, including costs, safety, regulation, infrastructure development, and demand creation. Against the backdrop of growing ammonia supply-chain development, this session will examine which applications are most likely to gain early traction across the power, maritime, and industrial sectors, including chemicals, manufacturing, and fertilizers, and will identify the key challenges and considerations for expanding ammonia use. The discussion will also explore the measures needed to stimulate demand, along with developments in international rules and standards, and consider the requirements for moving from demonstration projects to commercial deployment.
